Rensselaer, with generous support from IBM, is forming a $33 million research center that will create an information technology infrastructure so advanced that it can handle any level of Internet traffic, data storage, and new scientific challenges that require immense computing power, such as bioinformatics. East Meets West in Shanghai
Alan Balfour's new book World Cities: Shanghai,
(Wiley, 2002) is more than a study of the architecture of one of Asia's most influential cities. Balfour's book examines the history, culture, and politics of Shanghai that led to unprecedented growth in the last decade of the 20th century. More

Area Teens GEAR UP for Careers in Math and Science
For the third straight summer, students from local high schools set up camp at Rensselaer to take classes and experience life on a college campus. The scholars, 10th-grade participants in the Rensselaer Alliance to Increase Student Excellence (RAISE), a part of the Federal GEAR UP education initiative, plan to use their newfound knowledge to one day embark on careers in math, science, engineering, or healthcare. "Incubator.com" Launched as Central Resource for Incubators, Entrepreneurs, and Investors
After extensive development by students in various IT and management courses, Rensselaer's Incubator Program launched a new Web portal for the entrepreneurial community named www.Incubator.com. More

Annual Fund Raises $4.3 Million
At the close of the fiscal year on June 30, the Rensselaer Annual Fund reached $4.33 million dollars, up from last year's total of $4.23 million. The number of alumni donors to the Annual Fund increased by 5 percent. More

Famed Sculptor George Rickey Dies
Internationally acclaimed sculptor George Rickey died at his home in Minnesota July 17. He was 95. Rickey was one of the pioneers, along with Alexander Calder, of the kinetic, or moving, genre in sculpture. His work Six Random Lines Excentric — a gift from Rensselaer Trustee and entrepreneur Nancy Mueller — stands on campus in the Hassan Quad. More

Lemnios Retires
President Jackson hosted a retirement reception for Andrew Lemnios, interim vice president of Rensselaer at Hartford, on July 22 at the Russell Sage Dining Hall. Members of both the Troy and Hartford campus communities attended. More
