Belfort Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

 
Georges Belfort Elected to NAE  

Georges Belfort, the Russell Sage Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Belfort was elected for his advances in bioseparations using membrane filtration, affinity processes, and membrane bioreactors for biotechnology. He joins the NAE as one of 77 new members and nine foreign associates. More

Robotics Expert Appointed Head of Computer Science Department

Jeffrey Trinkle, former principal member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, has been tapped to chair the Department of Computer Science at Rensselaer. Trinkle is widely recognized as an expert in robotics. More

New Seed Funding Grants Announced

The Office of Research has provided $553,965 of seed funding grants to 12 research projects on campus. The projects cover a range of research from nanofabrication, grid computing, and laser microscopy to the study of mammalian cells and human cognition. The funds were provided through Rensselaer's Research Seed Funding Program, designed to support innovative and interdisciplinary projects that have a high probability of attracting major external funding. School of Architecture Lends Helping Hand in Preserving Local History

Thanks largely to the efforts of a School of Architecture graduate program, the memorable "signal building" in downtown Troy recently was placed in the National Register of Historic Places. The 1920 structure on State Street, officially known as the Fire Alarm Telegraph and Police Signaling Building, was used by dispatchers to monitor city and emergency calls. The building, now owned by Rensselaer County, has been vacant since the 1960s. More
