Severino Center to Host Showcase of Local Biotech Companies

The Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship has invited faculty, staff, students, and area businesspeople to attend the "Showcase of Local Biotechnology Companies" on Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Heffner Alumni House. Immediately before and after the event, the Severino Center will host networking sessions for attendees and participants.

During the showcase, top executives from 10 local corporations will provide brief overviews of their businesses, technology, and products, and discuss the biotechnology industry in the area. Some participating companies include Applied Biophysics, Evident Technologies, and VEC Technologies.

"For a student looking to start a career in biotech, this is a great opportunity," said Shreefal Mehta, research assistant professor of biotechnology management and the event's organizer. "The speakers are all involved with some incredibly ground-breaking technologies — like genetic testing, cell lines, and biomedical devices — so the audience will get a good idea of what it really means to work for a cutting-edge biotech company. In the process, they'll also get some free career advice and the chance to network with some of the area's top biotech players."

The "Showcase of Local Biotechnology Companies" is the latest event in Rensselaer's Biotechnology Management and Entrepreneurship Seminar Series. It is being co-marketed by the Center for Economic Growth in Albany and the New York Biotechnology Association. 1/27/03
