Obituary: Harry Herbrandson
Harry Herbrandson, former professor of chemistry,
died Nov. 12. Herbrandson, who received a bachelor's degree from
the University of Minnesota in 1942 and a doctorate from the University
of Illinois in 1945, joined the Rensselaer faculty in 1949. He
retired in 1986.
Prior to joining Rensselaer, Herbrandson was a research fellow
at Harvard University and an assistant professor of chemistry
at Union College.
His research interests focused on organic reaction
mechanisms, free radical reactions, polymerizations, and reactions
of organic sulfur and nitrogen compounds.
Herbrandson was a member of the American Chemical
Society, the Chemical Society of London, the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science,
Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa, and Pi Mu Epsilon.
He is survived by his wife, three children, and 10 grandchildren.
