New Education Center Opening at the Darrin Fresh Water Institute

The lodge at the Darrin Fresh Water Institute has been transformed into a modern learning facility that will benefit the Rensselaer and Lake George communities, as well as the larger environmental community. Updates include a state-of-the-art computing center, year-round student/visitor residence rooms, and a refurbished public space suitable for the many environmental education programs at the Institute. Research Funding Seeks to Provide More Time for Anthrax Treatment

Researchers at Rensselaer have been awarded a new federal grant to develop experimental compounds that may someday extend the period during which a person exposed to anthrax can be treated successfully. Ravi Kane, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at Rensselaer, has been awarded a grant of $500,000 from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to develop inhibitors of the anthrax toxin. The inhibitors will be tested in collaboration with Dr. Jeremy Mogridge at the University of Toronto. More

President Shirley Ann Jackson Discusses the "Graying" of American Science on NPR's Science Friday*

President Shirley Ann Jackson joined NPR’s Science Friday host Ira Flatow in a discussion on the "graying" of American science. Calling it a "quiet crisis," President Jackson emphasized the need to attract more students into the sciences, mathematics, and engineering to fill the predicted gap as a growing number of engineers and scientists retire. She discussed her hope of creating "a national dialogue and ultimately a national will to ensure that we maintain and build the kind of capability that we need, and that it involves all young people, including...the underrepresented majority."

LRC’s Peter Boyce Awarded Prestigious IESNA Medal

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) recently conferred its highest honor, the IESNA Medal Award, on Peter Boyce, professor of architecture and Human Factors program leader in Rensselaer's Lighting Research Center (LRC)." The award is given each year to recognize those who have made “meritorious technical achievement that has remarkably furthered the profession, art, or knowledge of illuminating engineering.” Boyce will receive the award, considered the highest honor in the lighting profession, in August at the Honors Luncheon at the IESNA Annual Conference in Chicago. More
