World-renowned neurosurgeon Benjamin
S. Carson will be the featured speaker at Rensselaer’s
197th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17. An
honorary degree will be conferred on Carson as well
as Nobel Prize winners Robert Solow and Richard Smalley,
philanthropist Morris “Marty” Silverman,
and former secretary of Health and Human Services
Donna Shalala. Senator Joseph Bruno will receive an
honorary degree at Honors Convocation in the fall.

Jackson to Discuss Science and Technology Leadership
On Thursday, April 10, President
Shirley Jackson will address the 28th Annual Colloquium
for Science and Technology Policy in Washington, D.C.
The colloquium is sponsored by the American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Jackson will present
the 2003 William D. Carey Lecture, “Standing on
the Knife Edge: The Leadership Imperative.” More

Report has ranked Rensselaer’s electronic arts
MFA program eighth in the specialty category of Multimedia/Visual
Communications. The ranking appears in the annual guidebook,
“America’s Best Graduate Schools.” Rensselaer
tied with the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena,
California). More

Dismisses Unfair Labor Practice Charges Against Rensselaer;
Union Vote Scheduled for Tuesday, April 15
The National Labor Relations
Board (NLRB) has dismissed unfair labor practice charges
against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and will not
proceed on any of the allegations filed against the university.
