Institute Funds More Than $35 Million
in Capital Improvements
Rensselaer will spend more than $17 million
next year (FY '03) in capital investments to improve campus
facilities, install new information technology infrastructure,
and support research. This is in addition to improvements,
costing almost $19 million, which have been provided for
in this year's budget (FY '02).

Residence halls are slated to receive a
bulk of the improvements. Bray and Cary Halls will undergo
comprehensive renovation. McGiffert Hall will get new windows.
The bathrooms in Davison and Nugent halls will be improved.
Colonie C and D will get new kitchens. Rensselaer will also
upgrade outdoor lighting, emergency generators, and fire
alarms and sprinkler systems.
Athletic and recreational facilities will
also see improvements. The women's locker room in the Alumni
Sports and Recreational Center will be improved and Robison
Pool will get a new roof.
"The many physical changes around the
Institute are key to making Rensselaer a world-class university.
We are committed to these projects that will provide the
Rensselaer community with the best we have to offer,"
said Claude Rounds, vice president for administration.
Other projects around campus include pedestrian
crosswalks between the core campus and the Houston Field
House, renovating the Carnegie Building for Humanities and
Social Sciences offices, and providing IT infrastructure
for the architecture design lab.
Research-related projects include an experimental
virtual classroom for architecture students, earthquake
simulators for the Earthquake Engineering Center, and renovating
the microbiology laboratory for the School of Science.
