Why did you choose to enroll at Rensselaer?
I joined Rensselaer because of its strong academic reputation, wide range of IT courses available and exceptional relationships with technology companies. The M.S. in Information Technology program provides students with foundational IT courses, but also offers the flexibility for students to choose among a number of IT concentrations. RPI offered significantly more concentrations and variety of IT courses than other universities I considered. In addition, outside companies recognize the talented students RPI has and heavily recruit from the university. The career fair and career services center at RPI are exceptional; I had several full-time and internship job offers after just two months at RPI.
What are some benefits of being part of the Graduate Community at Rensselaer?
As a grad student I was able to work alongside some of the brightest and most talented students and professors in the IT field. The diversity of students within the Program enabled me to understand business issues in a global context and approach problems from multiple points of view.
What would you tell a prospective student about choosing Rensselaer?
Rensselaer is a top university that does a great job of preparing its students for IT careers. The majority of the IT professors have real-world experience in technology which they are able to incorporate into their teaching. The professors genuinely want to see their students do well and go above and beyond to help them. Lastly, the professors, as well as career services, do a fantastic job of helping students find paid internships and full-time jobs at top companies throughout the US.
Describe your graduate project and its purpose/applications?
My IT Capstone Team worked with Deloitte to analyze mobile trends, opportunities, risks and risk-mitigation strategies. We completed an in-depth analysis of mobile technologies, architecture and security. In addition, we researched how specific industries were or could be utilizing mobile capabilities to advance their business goals. At the conclusion of the project, my team members and I delivered a presentation summarizing our findings and recommendations on the topic.
What did you decided to do after graduation?
I accepted a position with Travelers Insurance as an Information Technology Leadership Development Program Participant in June 2011 and am currently still with the company. I enjoy application development and am tailoring my rotations in the program accordingly. I have completed rotations as a VB.NET Developer, Business Analysis and Technical Lead. I plan to graduate the program into a Technical Lead or Application Designer role.
What are your hobbies/interests/special talents?
I enjoy running, sports, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Troy and Albany have a number of different places to go and things to do which made my time in the area enjoyable.
