Water Testing at the Darrin Fresh Water Institute

The Darrin Fresh Water Institute’s Bolton Landing Laboratory is a state and nationally certified environmental testing laboratory.  In addition to the analytical service provided to staff and guest research scientists, the laboratory offers bacterial and selected chemical analyses to the general public.  Bacterial testing of potable (drinking water) and non-potable (environmental) water samples are available for the following:

  • Total Coliform Bacteria
  • Fecal Coliform Bacteria
  • E. coli Bacteria
  • Heterotrophic Bacteria

These bacteria serve as indicators of the presence of animal or human waste.  The presence of elevated levels of these bacteria indicate that potentially disease-causing protozoans, bacteria and other microorganisms may be present in the water.  New York State Department of Health has determined maximum allowable bacterial levels for both drinking waters and those used for contact recreation (swimming, wading, etc.).
