In December 2001, the Business Intelligence (BI) Tool Selection Committee selected Brio Software, Inc. to provide the BI tool solution for the data warehousing environment at Rensselaer. In turn, the Data Warehouse Group wasted no time in implementing both Brio Portal and Brio Intelligence as part of Rensselaer's information infrastructure, providing the data warehouse solution for administrative users throughout campus. During the autumn of 2003, Hyperion Solutions, Inc. acquired Brio Software, though the impact on Rensselaer's implementation was minimal.

In January 2005, the production rollout of Brio 8 officially began. Completing the migration to this important release has provided users with faster, more reliable access to the Rensselaer Data Warehouse. The new Brio 8 Portal combined with the Brio 8 Insight plugin extend the functionality to include single signon and pass-through authentication, improved printing and PDF support, and full query abilities within the Insight plugin. In addition, BrioQuery documents can be made available in a pure Web-based Zero Client that requires no plugin, enabling the use of Macintosh and Windows-based machines, as well as virtually any platform that has a viable Web browser.
