Selection and Implementation of Effective Tools and Technologies for Distance Learning
Marie-Pierre Huguet
Post-Conference Workshop held at CIEC 2008
Abstract: Established and emerging technologies have become some of the most powerful tools available to us in distance education. They facilitate teaching and learning, stimulate new ideas about the educational process, and force us to challenge the way we teach and learn. But how should we select such tools and technologies and how do we effectively implement them in a distance education course? Most importantly, how do we ensure that pedagogy, not technology, is driving the election and the implementation? The participants in this workshop will be lead through a series of mini presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities that will enable them to identify the tools and technologies that work best for them and their institutions to ultimately develop their own, successful distance course. As a group, they will create a small unit of instruction using some of the media creation tools presented during the workshop. Other tools and technologies discussed will include: learning management systems, synchronous and asychronous tools, podcasting, blogs, wikis, HTML editors and accessibility tools.
Objectives:
- Identify elements of effective instructional design and apply them to designing distance or blended instruction
- Identify, compare, and contrast different forms of distance or blended instruction and select the one that best meets identified needs
- Identify, compare, and contrast different teaching and learning tools and select the one(s) that best support(s) identified needs
- Identify, compare, and contrast different emerging technologies and select the one(s) that best support(s) identified needs
- Develop user interface, template, and standards critical to successful implementation of distance or blended instruction
- Develop an effective evaluation process
- Identify, select, compare, and employ various tools and technologies for distance learning or blended instruction
