Tips

  • Back up your files!
  • Make sure to run Symantec Anti-Virus software with the most up-to-date virus definitions. You can get the absolute latest virus definition updates from the Symantec web site. Download the -x86.exe file.
  • Clean up your hard drive -- delete old files and uninstall applications you no longer need to use. This saves space and the laptop might boot faster.
  • Don't open attachments or follow links without verifying that the sender meant to send them to you.
  • Configure your computer to run as a general user not as an administrator.
  • Configure your mail client not to preview attachments or display images.
  • Install the Microsoft updates that come out monthly.
  • Run/update Microsoft's anti-spyware software available at www.microsoft.com.
  • Students: You can apply for a Resnet static IP address and firewall change (for running a web server) on-line.
  • Writing your thesis? Templates are available for LaTeX and Word.
