For over a half century, the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences has been building bridges from the liberal arts to the disciplines of engineering and science through the study of technology’s role in society. This year it celebrates 50 years of granting degrees on the Rensselaer campus, as well as the adoption of a new name that better articulates its academic strengths. The school continues to build upon its strengths in arts and design — valuable dimensions of interdisciplinary work in the humanities and social sciences — while always anticipating the expanding role of the humanities in the 21st century.  Read more

$1 Million Scholarship Supports Future Engineers

Rensselaer has received a gift of $1 million to establish the Paula and Jeffrey R. Gural ’64 Scholarship for undergraduate students in civil engineering. Through the scholarship, Jeffrey Gural said he intends to help ease the financial struggle many students face to meet college costs.

New Scholarship Opportunities Recognize Academic Excellence and Leadership

Two new annual scholarships for prospective students recognize academic excellence in mathematics and science, and leadership, service, and devotion to peers, schools, and communities. They are the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Scholarship and the Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship.

Professor B. Wayne Bequette Elected Fellow of AIChE

Modeling, design, and controls expert B. Wayne Bequette, professor of chemical and biological engineering, was recently elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The AIChE will honor Bequette at the group’s annual conference this November in Philadelphia.

Top Economist Becomes Head of Economics at Rensselaer

An internationally renowned economist with a 25-year history at one the country’s leading Federal Reserve Banks will join Rensselaer as the new head of the department of economics. Arturo Estrella is currently senior vice president for the research and statistics group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
