AT WORK Design From Day One KENDALL BALDWIN 11 Kendall Baldwin 11 entered the School of Architecture without having any prior experience using 80 percent of the software but that changed fast. We started learning from the first day of the first year she said. We were always kept up to date by professors who knew the latest. We got to the point where we were as savvy as people working at firms. At Grimshaw I knew every single program they had from the moment I walked through the door. Grimshaw where Baldwin worked as an architectural designer is one of the worlds most innovative architectural firms and has been responsible for many high-profile projects not least of which is Rensselaers spectacular EMPAC. After spending a semester in New York City with CASE Baldwin secured an internship with Grimshaw that translated into a full-time position upon her graduation. At Grimshaw Baldwin worked on museums a genetics center a subway transit center and a complex of buildings that will be erected in the Middle East. My favorite part of working at Grimshaw was that even though its a relatively large and very well-known company its not remotely corporate America she said. From day one I was given really important responsibilities and tasks and treated like a full member of the team. Today she is an assistant instructor at Princeton University. We got to the point where we were as savvy as people working at firms if not more so. communities 23
