Earthquake Engineering

Seismology concepts including plate tectonics, fault mechanisms, quantification of earthquake size, and wave propagation. Dynamic sensors for earthquake ground motion measurement. Estimation of ground motion parameters using attenuation relationships. Linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses for evaluation of the seismic response of structures. Code-based approach to the seismic analysis and design of structural systems. Seismic design considerations for various construction materials. Base isolation and energy dissipation systems for seismic protection of structures. Prerequisite: CIVL-6450. Spring term alternate years.
