Green Roof “Groundmaking”
It’s official: On Earth Day, the roof on the Rensselaer Union bookstore debuted its new look that will be growing all things green. Members of the campus community and alumni attended the inaugural “Green Roof Groundmaking” celebration on Friday, April 22, 2011 on the Rensselaer Union southwest patio area.
The event was a festive occasion, with remarks to be delivered by Grand Marshal Ben Hunt; Samuel Punshon-Smith ’10, former Class of 2010 President; Laban Coblentz, chief of staff and associate vice president for policy and planning; and President Shirley Ann Jackson. Following remarks, 100 student volunteers planted 18,000 green plant plugs. Several other groups involved in the celebration planning included the Student Sustainability Task Force, Ecologic, and vendors from the RPI Farmers Market.
The idea to create a “green roof” on the Union bookstore has been germinating for some time. A green roof an example of a sustainability concept is a plant-based multipurpose roofing choice capable of rain water filtration and collection, thermal energy improvements, cleaner and cooler ambient air, and general public enjoyment.
