Nick Bailen Named First Team All-America

Student-athlete Nick Bailen has been selected to the CCM Hockey National All-America East First Team. The CCM HOCKEY All-American Hockey Teams are sponsored by CCM HOCKEY and chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association.

A senior defenseman, Bailen led the Engineers in scoring. Bailen had 31 points on a team-best 12 goals and 19 assists in 35 games. Seven of his goals came on the power play and two were game-winners. He had nine penalties for 18 minutes. In 22 league contests, he had 19 points, scoring nine goals with 10 assists.

Bailen had at least one point in 19 games, including nine contests with multiple points. He scored goals in 10 different games and had at least one assist in 13. His most prolific stretch came late in the campaign when he tallied 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists) in eight games to close out the regular season.

He was the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week twice and chosen to the All-ECAC Hockey First Team.

Among the league leaders, he was second in defensemen scoring and overall power play goals. He was also 12th in both points and assists. Nationally, Bailen is second in defensemen scoring and 11th in power play goals. Rensselaer finished with an 18-14-5 overall record and was second in ECAC Hockey (12-7-3).

His single season career-high was 36 points (8 goals, 28 assists) in 2010-11 when he earned All-ECAC Hockey First Team honors and National All-America recognition. That year he had eight goals and 28 assists for 36 points in 36 games, helping the Engineers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. He ranked among the league and national leaders in defensemen scoring.

Off the ice, Bailen has been involved in community service since arriving on campus and currently leads a group of players in Rensselaer’s relationship with the Troy Amateur Youth Hockey Association. He and his teammates visit an area rink once a month and spend time on the ice teaching local players, who range from 5 to 13 years old, the fundamentals of the sport. He has also assisted the Rensselaer Newman Center with fundraising activities and he and his teammates have supported various causes and participated in a variety of charitable events.

A dual major in business and management and economics, Bailen has a cumulative grade point average of around 3.90. A Capital One National Academic All-America Third Team choice as a junior, he has had an internship with LeverPoint Management, a boutique fund administration firm. He worked with the private equity and treasury departments on a variety of projects.

Bailen, who signed with the Rochester Americans following his senior year, has been on the Dean’s List multiple times and has been an ECAC Hockey All-Academic honoree. He is also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society.
