Transition Program for First-Year Students
In its second year, as part of the CLASS Initiative, the Office of the Student
Experience hosted the “Grow Your Future” program as a way to provide first-year students with the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, and to encourage the students to begin the process of considering future goals for their sophomore year and beyond.
“The goal of this event is to bring together our students, faculty, and staff so that we can celebrate the accomplishments of our first-year students and to start to prepare them for the transition to sophomore year,” said Amy Pettengill, class dean. “In recognizing the achievements of the students, we also want them to take a moment to pause and reflect on their first year, and learn what is in store for next year.”
The overall program is developed in collaboration with the Advising & Learning Assistance Center (ALAC), the Center of Career and Professional Development, Residence Life, Sodexo, and several Rensselaer student representatives.
The program was held on May 8 in the Commons Dining Hall. In addition to the first-year students, nearly 30 Rensselaer faculty and staff members also attended the event. Prior to the celebratory lunch program, first-year students participated in a series of workshops, implemented by ALAC Learning Assistants, that provided them with an introduction to campus resources, as well as social, academic, and career opportunities.
