Joint Service Awards and Recognition Ceremony
The 63rd Annual Joint Service Awards and Recognition Ceremony was held on Saturday, May 4, in the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center.
Approximately 180 guests were in attendance. More than 100 cadets and midshipmen received awards this year, some of which were awarded by local representatives from the American Legion, Military Officers Association of America, Reserve Officers Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution.
This year’s guest speaker was Charles Carletta, secretary of the Institute and general counsel at Rensselaer. The ceremony also recognized 44 graduating seniors from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The ceremony concluded with the final award being given—the Taylor Trophy. The Taylor Trophy was donated in memory of 2nd Lt. Robert Taylor, a Rensselaer and Army ROTC graduate and fallen Vietnam veteran who died March 14, 1966, in Pleiku, Vietnam.
For more than 40 years, the trophy has inspired friendly competition and camaraderie between the ROTC services at Rensselaer. Each year, points are earned from various competitive sporting events and culminate with the service earning the highest number of points winning possession of the trophy until next year. This year the Taylor Trophy finds its home with the Navy.
