Grand Marshal Week Goes Under the Big Top!

Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls! It's showtime! As part of a long-standing tradition at Rensselaer, Grand Marshal Week, a week of campuswide celebrations featuring student organizations and student elections, will be held April 13-21. Synonymous with the flair of circus activities, this year's theme is "Under the Big Top."

Each spring, the campus is buzzing with activity as students and members of the Rensselaer community participate in the event, which also celebrates student life and government, cultural diversity, and the performing arts.

The kickoff event will be held on Friday, April 13, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Rensselaer Union McNeil Room. The event will showcase menu offerings from several local Troy restaurants. In addition, members of Sheer Idiocy will host a free Improv comedy show at Mother's from 8 to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, April 14, the Rensselaer Union Speakers Forum will feature Grant Imahara, a co-host of Mythbusters, a science entertainment program that airs on the Discovery Channel. The lecture will take place in the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center Concert Hall, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are required to attend.

On Tuesday, April 17, members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual Provost's BBQ and Carnival. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Armory. No classes will be held on April 17.

Additional event highlights include: the Habitat for Humanity Homerun fundraiser, an opportunity to learn to kayak with the Outing Club, the Crew Club Erg-a-thon, a Sigma Delta Dance-a-thon, the Cycling Club's “little bike” races, a showcase featuring Engineers for a Sustainable World projects, a blood drive for the American Red Cross, along with a number of athletic events and more. The finale event will take place on Saturday, April 21, in the East Campus Athletic Village main gym, from 7 to 10 p.m. As part of the program, the RPI Ballroom club will host the “2012 Dancing With the RPI Stars” event. In its second year, faculty and staff are paired with student members of the RPI Ballroom Club in a competition to show off their ballroom dance moves.

Home to nearly 200 clubs, sports, and organizations, Rensselaer is also recognized as one of only 20 colleges and universities in the United States that operates its student union using this structure.
