Jonas Braasch To Lead CCC
The Office for Research has announced that Jonas Braasch has been appointed director of the Center for Cognition, Communication, and Culture (CCC) at Rensselaer, which will celebrate its formal launch on Nov. 13 (see story). Most recently an associate professor in the School of Architecture, Braasch teaches in the graduate program in architectural acoustics and began his career with Rensselaer in 2006.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jonas Braasch as the first director of the Center for Cognition, Communication, and Culture,” said Jonathan Dordick, vice president for research. “Dr. Braasch has been involved in envisioning and planning for the center. His own research is at the intersection of architecture, acoustics, and music, and represents a prime example of the multidisciplinary work that is at the core of the center’s mission. I am certain the center will flourish under his leadership, dedication, and inspiration.”
The CCC is Rensselaer’s 10th institutewide research center and will focus on the intersections and interdependency of cognition, communication, and culture in the context of contemporary research, technology, and society. Interdisciplinary research activities will draw on the arts, design, engineering, humanities, science, and social science.
Braasch is an accomplished acoustician, musicologist, and sound artist, and he is the co-founder and director of the Communication Acoustics and Aural Architecture Research Laboratory (CA3RL), which is part of the Rensselaer Architectural Acoustics Program. His research interests include binaural hearing, multi-channel audio technology, telematic music systems, perceptual audio/visual integration, intelligent systems, and musical acoustics. He has co-authored more than 60 journal and conference papers and three monographs.
For his work, Braasch has received funding from the NSF, NSERC, DFG (German Science Foundation), and NYSCA. As a soprano saxophonist and sound artist, he has ongoing collaborations with Curtis Bahn, Chris Chafe, Michael Century, Mark Dresser, Pauline Oliveros, Doug van Nort, and Sarah Weaver, among others. In 2006, he was awarded with the Lothar-Cremer Prize, the highest recognition of the German Acoustical Society for young investigators. Braasch is a board member of the Deep Listening Institute (Kingston, N.Y.), and holds a courtesy adjunct professor appointment with the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.
Braasch received a master’s degree from Dortmund University (Germany, 1998) in physics and two Ph.D. degrees from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany (2001, 2004) in electrical engineering/information science and musicology. |
