By 2050, it is estimated that there will be 8 to 10 billion people, and major advances in energy technology will be required to meet their needs. Rensselaer has faced that challenge by launching and expanding programs in renewable energy sources and energy conservation.

Prabhat Hajela Named Provost
*

Prabhat Hajela, an experienced academic and administrative leader, has been appointed provost of Rensselaer, effective July 1. A professor of aerospace engineering and vice provost at Rensselaer, Hajela has served as acting provost since Jan. 1, 2012.

Chasan Building Renovation Brings a Piece of History Back To Life in Downtown Troy

The historic Chasan Building was the site of a ribbon cutting at which Rensselaer and Columbia Development Companies unveiled the project that has converted the building into office space for the Rensselaer Institute Advancement team.

10th Annual Commencement Colloquy

The 10th annual President’s Commencement Colloquy was held May 25 at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center. The audience filled the concert hall to capacity to listen to the Institute’s 2012 honorary degree recipients.

New Trustees Join Institute Board

At its May board meeting, the Rensselaer Board of Trustees announced that Sean O’Sullivan ’85 will be formally elected to the board at its December 2012 meeting. O’Sullivan is one of several new members who have joined the board in the past year.

RPI Guardian—set to launch this summer—works with an individual’s cell phone and can instantly alert Public Safety with critical individual information in an emergency, when activated.

Lally School Hosts High School Business Plan Competition

Lally hosted its first business plan competition for high school students. On May 30, 11 student teams had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of management scholars and area business leaders.
