Faculty Celebrated at Annual Recognition Dinner
Rensselaer faculty members were honored with annual Institute awards, and for service and dedication, at the 49th annual Faculty Recognition Dinner, held May 7 in the Heffner Alumni House.
Nadarajah Narendran, professor in the Lighting Research Center, received the William H. Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award. Established by Edward P. Hamilton ’07 in memory of William H. Wiley (Class of 1886), the award honors those who have won the respect of the faculty through excellence in teaching, productive research, and interest in the totality of the educational process.
Peter Tessier, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering, received the James M. Tien ’66 Early Career Award for Faculty, which honors productivity in both teaching and research.
John Tichy, professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, received the Jerome Fischbach Faculty Travel Grant, which is funded by Jerome Fischbach ’38 for contributions faculty members have made to the education and motivation of students.
Thomas Sharkey, assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering, received the Class of 1951 Outstanding Teaching Development Grant, established by the Class of 1951 to recognize faculty members for their outstanding accomplishments in education.
Tarek Abdoun, associate dean for research in the School of Engineering and Iovino Career Development Professor, was awarded the Board of Trustees’ 2012 Outstanding Teacher Award, which was established in 1994 to recognize outstanding accomplishments in classroom instruction.

Thirty Years of Service: Pier Abetti, Alan Cutler, Jeffrey Durgee, John Gowdy, Cheng Hsu, Deborah Kaminski, Gerald Korenowski, TohMing Lu, Michael Podowski, Bill Puka, and John Schroeder.
Thirty-Five Years of Service: Ricardo Dobry, Jane Koretz, Larry Reid, Richard Smith, Bruce Watson, and Michael Wozny.
Forty Years of Service: Charles Boylen, Larry Kagan, and Albert Paulson.
Forty-Five Years of Service: Harry McLaughlin.
Fifty Years of Service: Ronald Bailey and Al Wallace.
Retiring Faculty: Gary Adams, Alan Cutler, David Hess, Michael Zenzen, and Xi-Cheng Zhang.
