|Director of the Physical Plant Named
Ernie Katzwinkel, who most recently served as a consultant with Dewberry & Davis, LLC, has joined Rensselaer as the new director of the physical plant.
In his new role, Katzwinkel will have comprehensive administrative and management responsibility for the operation and maintenance of Rensselaer’s facilities, buildings, utility infrastructure, life safety systems, and related emergency response planning. He also will play a major role in the Institute’s capital planning process, including the energy management, deferred maintenance, and building safety projects. He will report to Vice President for Administration Claude Rounds.
“Ernie Katzwinkel has more than 25 years experience and a proven record of success in all aspects of physical plant and service management, and I have no doubt that he will serve us well in his new capacity,” said Rounds.
At Dewberry & Davis, Katzwinkel managed all aspects of providing architecture and engineering services to the Department of Defense agencies for a top 40 national engineering firm, with primary responsibilities for business development, strategic planning, fiscal performance, and operations providing professional service. During his tenure, he directed the development and execution of an energy management program yielding an annual cost savings of more than $1 million. He also bundled long-term electricity and natural gas requirements, avoiding over $1.5 million in energy costs annually.
He has held positions as assistant commander for engineering program and resources for the Naval Facilities Engineer Command in Washington, D.C., and has served as commanding officer for the Navy Public Works Center and Engineering Field Activity in Great Lakes, Ill.
Katzwinkel earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering from Penn State. He also completed the Executive Management Program in Strategic Planning at Pennsylvania State and Chief Information Officer Overview at the National Defense University.
