Big Red Freakout Ice House

On Saturday, Jan. 29, more than 500 alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members gathered at the Heffner Alumni House for the Big Red Freakout Ice House.

This annual hockey tradition features a pre-game buffet dinner and pep rally, complete with a visit from Puckman and the RPI Pep Band, and face-painting services provided by the Red & White Student Organization. Shuttles were provided to take guests to the Houston Field House for the main event, and return them to the Heffner Alumni House afterward for drinks, desserts and snacks, and the chance to enjoy a victory party with the team and coaching staff.

This year’s Freakout also provided an opportunity to celebrate the 50th Reunion of the 1960-61 men’s hockey team, which earned a trip to the Frozen Four. Of the 29 team members, support staff, and announcers who were invited to the weekend, 18 were able to attend. They came from places as far away as Canada, Texas, Florida, Oregon, and California. During the weekend, returning alumni from the 1960-61 team met with members of the current squad, enjoyed the alumni hockey game, and were feted in an on-ice ceremony on Saturday night during the Big Red Freakout game.

The Engineers defeated then-No. 1 ranked Yale 5-2 before a sold-out Houston Field House in the 34th annual Big Red Freakout.
