Retirees Return for Annual Luncheon

Early in October, the Division of Human Resources welcomed 115 retirees to campus for Rensselaer’s 14th annual Retiree Day Luncheon. The event gave retirees an opportunity to reconnect with their former co-workers, friends, and other retirees, and to learn more about the campus today and future plans. One of the hot topics of discussion was changes to medical benefits coverage and costs.
Health-care costs are rising for Americans as a whole and medical insurance is becoming harder to obtain for older Americans. As such, the AARP has recently indicated that health care is one of biggest worries for retirees in the U.S.

“We were pleased to be able to tell our retirees that Rensselaer will continue to provide them with comprehensive and affordable medical, prescription, and dental plans with only a modest increase of $5 per month,” said Curtis Powell, vice president for human resources.

Just a few years ago, the annual cost to a Rensselaer retiree for his or her medical plan was $12,800. Effective January 1, 2012, the new annual cost — including the $5 per month increase — will be only $2,500 annually
.

The Division of Human Resources will provide a medical, prescription, and dental benefit educational seminar for retirees on Friday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rensselaer Union, Room 3202.

At the Retiree Day Luncheon, President Jackson provided the retirees with an overview of recent changes to the campus and highlighted some of the major accomplishments of the Institute’s faculty and staff.

President Jackson said, “Rensselaer has a deeply rooted culture of hard work, involvement, and deep commitment to taking on the toughest challenges because of you. You have built the foundation on which we stand as we provide ideas, analysis, and leadership. Rensselaer continues its tradition of excellence and service, thanks to you.”
