Rensselaer To Celebrate Grand Opening of Moe ’s
Southwest Grill Sept.14

The taste of Southwest cuisine has made its way to the Rensselaer campus. Known for its popular “Welcome to Moe’s” greeting, pop-culture inspired menu, and atmosphere, Moe’s Southwest Grill will host its official grand opening on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The venue, located on the corner of 15th Street and College Avenue, is a Sodexho-owned franchise that now resides in the space that was formerly home to Java ++. Members of the campus and local community are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Moe’s Southwest Grill is a fun and engaging fast-casual concept serving a wide variety of fresh, made-to-order Southwest fare,” said Elaine Reynolds, newly appointed marketing director for Rensselaer Hospitality Services. “This is our second venue established within a college campus setting. We are thrilled to be part of the Rensselaer community, and look forward to serving the campus and local community.”

Moe’s offers a plethora of meal options, including burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, salads, and fajitas. Individuals can choose from more than 25 fresh ingredients, such as grilled chicken, steak, or tofu. In addition, there are meals for kids, and free chips and salsa with every meal.

Reynolds also noted that to demonstrate their commitment to freshness, Moe’s has never used freezers, microwaves, animal fat, lard, or monosodium glutamate (MSG). Over the years, the restaurant has added ground beef, pulled pork, bacon, and junior burritos to the menu.

“Food quality, safety, and customer service are no joke, but aside from that, Moe’s tries not to take itself too seriously,” Reynolds said. “ For example, for fun, the folks at Moe’s often give each menu item a unique name like The Funk Meister taco, Homewrecker burrito, Billy Barou nachos, to name a few, just to keep things interesting.”

“We are always looking for new and exciting dining options to offer to our customers,” said Jackie Baldwin, certified executive chef with Rensselaer dining vendor Sodexo Hospitality Services. “Bringing a national brand to campus really helps to increase customer satisfaction on many levels. For example, we use local and organic products as they are available and we’re flexible with changing the menu offering based on customer suggestions or requests. And we’re also aware of various food allergens that people may have, so our menu supports this and offers alternatives.”

The $475,000 renovation of Moe’s is an adaptive re-use of space to provide late-night dining and entertainment alternatives for campus and community residents. The renovation included installing a new hood exhaust system, new floor, paint, signage, décor, tables, and chairs.

Noting the number of coffee areas on campus, Sodexo met with various student leaders, conducted surveys, and hosted regional Sodexo administrators on campus. According to Tim MacTurk, resident district manager with Sodexo, Moe’s was based on listening to students’ input. “The opening of Moe’s represents our commitment to communiversity and provides a venue that entices both the Troy community and our student body.”

Moe’s will be open daily Sunday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The venue will accept FLEX dollars (Rensselaer meal plan), RAD, cash, and credit cards. Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff will receive a 10 percent discount when showing their Rensselaer ID.
