“Best of” Textbook Includes LRC Study on Impact of Light on Teens
Research led by Associate Professor Mariana Figueiro on the impact of light on teenagers’ sleeping habits was selected for publication in Best of Sleep Medicine 2011. The textbook is designed to keep sleep clinicians, researchers, and technologists informed of the latest science and technology advances in the growing field of sleep medicine. Figueiro, light and health program director at the Lighting Research Center (LRC), led a series of field studies that examined not only the impact of removing morning blue light, but also the seasonal impact and the increased evening light exposure during the spring months on teens’ melatonin onset and sleep times.

Doctoral Candidate Philip W. Robinson Awarded Fulbright Grant
Philip Robinson, a Ph.D. student of the graduate program in architectural acoustics, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to continue his research into the effects of architectural enclosures on listeners’ perception of sound. His research will take place at the Aalto University of Science and Technology in Helsinki, Finland. Robinson received a master’s in architectural acoustics from Rensselaer in 2009 and a bachelor’s from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2004. His work will further knowledge that will be used in acoustic applications from concert halls to home theaters to telecommunications systems.

Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony September 23
Mark your calendar, and plan to join the Rensselaer Alumni Association for the public induction of the newest members into the Rensselaer Alumni Hall of Fame. This year’s group includes Rensselaer’s 11th president, Livingston Houston ’13; architect Peter Bohlin ’58; digital camera inventor Steven Sasson ’72; pioneering genome explorer Claire Fraser-Liggett ’77; and molecular geneticist Jeffrey Friedman ’77. The induction ceremony will be held Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. in the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center. Reception to follow.
