“Tetherless World” Receives Grant From Microsoft

The Tetherless World Constellation has received an unrestricted $100,000 donation from Microsoft Research Laboratories. The funding will support research within the constellation on how Semantic Web technologies can be applied to interpreting, storing, and utilizing financial data. The funding will also be utilized by researchers within the constellation to explore new ways to store data in what is known as “the cloud.”

“The constellation is excited about this show of support from one of the leading industrial laboratories in our field,” said Tetherless World Constellation Professor Jim Hendler. “We look forward to the new joint research opportunities it presents.”

In awarding the donation, Microsoft expressed interest in the work within the constellation on open data systems. These open data systems allow for the free and unrestricted sharing of data via the Web. Increasingly, open data is being integrated into new computing technologies like those that Microsoft is currently developing, such as the Odata protocol and the Azure cloud computing platform. Cloud computing allows users to access things like word processing and computing applications via cloud services on the Internet. It is also increasingly being used to store and access large amounts of data.

The researchers within the constellation will help add the Semantic Web to cloud technologies with a focus on ways to integrate semantic searching and tagging with financial data. Such technologies would allow for easier and more efficient searches of such data as well as entirely new ways to use and present the data.

“This was very much a combined and long-term effort by the entire constellation leadership, including Professors Deborah McGuinness and Peter Fox,” Hendler said. “The donation really highlights the multiplying effect that the constellation concept allows.”
