Inside Rensselaer

Focus on:
Student Athletes Excel Academically

Seventy percent of undergraduate students at Rensselaer are actively engaged in athletics, a cornerstone of campus life. With 23 varsity teams, Rensselaer sports teams are bringing recognition and honors to the Institute and to the student-athletes who excel in their sports and in the classroom.

Recently, the 2009-10 Liberty League Winter All-Academic Team was announced and 59 Rensselaer student-athletes were selected. Honored student-athletes must have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20. The winter sports included are men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track & field.

Although the men’s and women’s hockey teams don’t compete in the Liberty League (they are part of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference), they had a great deal of success academically this winter as well: there are 19 men’s hockey players on the dean’s list and 12 women’s hockey players.

“We are very proud of the continued academic success of our student-athletes. They have established a culture of excellence in the classroom that truly sets the bar high for each incoming class to embrace and emulate. The student-athletes accomplish this feat while also excelling on the fields, rinks, courts, tracks, and pools in a manner that continues to represent Rensselaer in a very positive light.”
