Fire & Ice Festival 2010

Despite the news that Punxsutawney Phil has confirmed that winter weather will last for another six weeks, more than 500 members of the Rensselaer campus community and their families bundled up and attended the Fire & Ice Winter Festival held Feb. 6.

“Last year, in response to a request from students, I was happy to sponsor the Winter Carnival, along with my Cabinet and members of the Board of Trustees,” said President Shirley Ann Jackson. “This year, I am delighted that the idea has taken hold all across campus, and that Rensselaer students have taken a major leadership role in planning and executing the activities.”

“In particular, I wish to commend Undergraduate Council members Emma Furlano, Class of 2010, and Andrew Stevens, Class of 2012, for taking the lead,” President Jackson added. “With their vision and enthusiasm, they rallied a dozen or so other students to organize the day, with the result that the carnival this year is a student-driven event for the entire university.”

The free event featured a number of events, demonstrations, and activities held at the East Campus Athletic Village and Houston Field House. The Winter Carnival included a series of winter-themed activities and games, ice-skating, a circus-style fire arts performance, a cardboard sled race, food, live music, and comedic performances by Rensselaer student groups, and much more. Special highlights included a reunion of the 1985 NCAA championship men’s hockey team, as well as hockey games and men’s and women’s basketball games. Prior to the start of the RPI-Clarkson hockey game, a pep rally and a 15-minute fireworks display set the stage for the Rensselaer men’s hockey team, where the Engineers defeated Clarkson 2-1 in front of more than 4,000 fans at the Houston Field House.

The event was sponsored by the Office of the President, the Division of Student Life, and the Rensselaer Union, with support from the Division of Administration.
