Black Family Technology Awareness Day February 6
Members of the Rensselaer campus and area students and their families are invited to attend the 12th annual Black Family Technology Awareness Day program on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 8:15 a.m.to 5 p.m. The daylong program features more than 20 workshops led by Rensselaer professors, students, and community organizations that are designed to spur young people’s interest in pursuing careers in science and engineering. The annual program is hosted by Rensselaer’s Office of Institute Diversity and Academic Outreach Programs at Rensselaer. The Black Family Technology Awareness Day planning committee members are: Kari Bennett, Jacqueline Farmer, Mike Gunther, Nicole Johnson, Ajuba Jones, Jana Neudel, and Jessica Otitigbe. Fire & Ice Winter Festival February 6
Members of the Rensselaer campus community and their families are invited to attend the Fire & Ice Winter Festival on Saturday, Feb. 6, in the East Campus Athletic Village and Houston Field House. The free event will feature a series of activities taking place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Special highlights include a reunion of the 1985 NCAA championship hockey team, a men’s basketball game, and a pep rally for the RPI-Clarkson hockey game, concluding with the men’s hockey game. A Winter Carnival will kick off 1 p.m. and will include a series of winter-themed activities and games, carnival games, ice carving demonstrations, and inflatable games. In addition, there will be competitions, exhibitions, free ice skating, food, live music and comedic performances by Rensselaer student groups, and much more. At 5:30 p.m. there will be a pep rally with the Pep Band followed by fireworks at 5:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Divisions of Student Life and Administration, and the Rensselaer Union. Alumni Hall of Fame Call for Nominations: March 1
The achievements of Rensselaer alumni through the years have had important and far-reaching effect. From the bridge builders of the 19th century to the engineers of space exploration, from the inventors of the Industrial Revolution to the entrepreneurs of today’s computer technology, Rensselaer alumni have helped shape our world. The nominations process has begun for the 2011 Rensselaer Alumni Hall of Fame, which is designed to permanently preserve, celebrate, and widely communicate the long and exceptional heritage of Rensselaer. To date, 63 alumni and friends of the Institute whose accomplishments have benefited the world have been inducted. The new class of inductees will be announced in June 2011, with recognition a public ceremony in the fall of 2011. Nominations for worthy alumni are due for consideration by March 1, 2010. Annual Faculty-Staff Memorial Service March 23
The Pillars of Rensselaer will host the annual Faculty-Staff Memorial Service honoring those faculty and staff who have passed away in the past year. The service will be held on Tuesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel + Cultural Center on Burdett Avenue. Light refreshments will follow the service.
