Healthy Campus Initiative: Weight Loss and Fitness Challenge
The Division of Human Resources continues to support Rensselaer’s Healthy Campus Initiative by launching a 10-week weight loss and fitness challenge for Rensselaer faculty and staff in partnership with Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan. The Weigh 2 BeSM (W2B) program kicked off last month with more than 100 faculty and staff participants who committed to their long-term success in health, fitness, and weight management

“In launching the Healthy Campus Initiative, we hope to encourage Rensselaer faculty and staff to consider the benefits of pursuing healthier lifestyle habits to improve one’s holistic outlook of the mind, body, and spirit,” said Curtis Powell, vice president for human resources, who also plans to participate in the W2B program along with several members of his staff. “The program, provided by CDPHP, is designed to support healthy and sustainable weight loss through increased and regular physical activity, healthy eating, and positive lifestyle changes in a fun and supportive environment.”

A buddy system is used with employees working in teams of two. Participants will attend weekly lunch-and-learn sessions where they will find out how to set realistic goals to achieve a balanced diet, and incorporate physical activity into a busy schedule. Additional W2B benefits include pre- and post-body composition analysis, weekly weigh-ins, an opportunity to join a walking club, and free pedometers for participants. Plans are also under consideration to include the services of a nutrition counselor and/or a personal trainer.

An Online Fitness Tracker will be used to monitor and determine who wins a weekly physical activity award. Cash prizes for teams and employees with the highest percentage of weight loss also will be awarded on a weekly basis. Participants will receive weekly e-mails that recognize winners and give motivational tips for achieving goals. The final prizes for employee and employee teams with the highest percentage of weight loss will be announced on April 7.

Based on increased interest in the program, the Division of Human Resources may consider running an additional session for the spring and summer. For more information about the program, contact Louis Padula at padull@rpi.edu or at 276-6164.
