RAA China Chapter Welcomes Rensselaer Delegation

President Shirley Ann Jackson and a delegation from Rensselaer recently traveled to China to participate in the World Economic Forum in Tianjin and visit with Rensselaer alumni in China. The delegation included professors Jonathan Dordick, director of the Rensselaer Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Howard P. Isermann Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering; Angel Garcia, senior constellation professor in biocomputation and bioinformatics; Ravi Kane, the P.K. Lashmet Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering; and K.V. Lakshmi, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology; along with Laban Coblentz, chief of staff and vice president for policy and planning; Brenda Wilson-Hale, vice president for advancement; and Jeff Schanz, assistant vice president for alumni relations.

Some 60 Rensselaer alumni and officials from academic partner institutions honored President Jackson with a reception and award presentation in Beijing. During the alumni reception, the Rensselaer Alumni Association’s (RAA) China Chapter screened Why Not Change the World? — a video created by the leaders of the China Chapter that highlights the career achievements of Rensselaer alumni in China.

“It’s always encouraging to see the enthusiasm of alumni and alumnae no matter where they are in the world, but in particular in China,” President Jackson said to The Poly. “Clearly, they are committed to strengthening awareness of Rensselaer.”

Shufeng Xu, parent of a Class of 2007 graduate and honorary president of the RAA China chapter; Xinfeng Wang, MBA ’03, president of the RAA China Chapter; and Longjun (Peter) Zhu, MBA ’99, secretary general of the RAA China chapter, were instrumental in pulling together the program, along with Rensselaer’s Office of Alumni Relations.

At the culmination of the event, the RAA China Chapter presented President Jackson with a customized commemorative plaque, designed in her honor by Chapter President Wang. The hand-carved plaque features a portrait of President Jackson along with Chinese characters signifying the words “Change,” “Determination,” “Persistence,” and “Excellence.” These inspirational words were carefully chosen from a speech by President Jackson.

Honorary Chapter President Xu also arranged an interview with President Jackson in China that aired internationally via satellite TV. Both Xu and Zhu are recipients of the Rensselaer Alumni Association Key Award, which recognizes outstanding service and support of the advancement of Rensselaer.
