Rick Mastracchio ’87 To Deliver Hartford Commencement Address
NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio ’87, who completed his third space shuttle flight this past April, will address the 337 graduates, their families and friends, and members of Rensselaer’s faculty and staff at the 53rd Commencement exercises at the Hartford campus of Rensselaer on Saturday, June 5, beginning at 11 a.m. Special awards to be presented include the Outstanding Student Awards. Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson will preside over the ceremony.

An experienced astronaut with NASA, Mastracchio has been a crew member of three successful space flights since 2000. He recently returned from the STS-131 mission to the International Space Station aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, where he conducted three spacewalks. As a member of the Discovery crew, Mastracchio worked as a mission specialist, ascent/entry flight engineer, and primary robotic arm operator.

Mastracchio began his career with Hamilton Standard as an engineer, and earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering at the Rensselaer Hartford campus. In 1990, he joined NASA as an engineer in the Flight Crew Operations Directorate. He was chosen as an astronaut candidate in April 1996.

Among the members of the outstanding Class of 2009-2010 at Hartford are 12 students receiving a second advanced degree from Rensselaer, 13 students from the International Scholars Program, one married couple, and one member of the Rensselaer Hartford campus staff.

The Hartford campus is home to Rensselaer-wide Education for Working Professionals (EWP) for students pursuing master’s degrees across a range of technological fields. Graduate programs are offered in business administration, management, computer science, computer and systems engineering, electrical engineering, engineering science, mechanical engineering, and information technology.
