Freshman Jerry D’Amigo Helps Team USA Capture Gold Medal
Rensselaer freshman Jerry D’Amigo had a goal and an assist in helping the United States National Junior Team to the gold medal of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship (WJC). The forward picked up both his points in the third period in leading the U.S. to its first WJC gold in six years. Following the game, he was recognized as one of the top three players on the team.

D’Amigo finished second in the tournament — and on the team — in scoring with 12 points on six goals and six assists. He was first on the team in goals and third in assists. Among his goals were a game-winning goal and a power play goal.

He was named the U.S. Player of the Game twice and he had multiple points (five goals, one assist) in each of the three games in the medal round. The United States finished with a 6-1 record with its only loss coming to Canada, 5-4 in a shootout, in the preliminary round.

A 5-11, 200-pound native of Binghamton, N.Y., D’Amigo is currently fourth on the Engineers in scoring with five goals and nine assists for 14 points in 18 games. He has a pair of power goals and three game-winning goals. He is second in ECAC Hockey and sixth nationally in game-winning goals. He is second among rookies in the league — and 16th nationally — with an average of 0.78 points per game.

Last season, D’Amigo was second on the U.S. Under-18 Team in scoring with 23 goals and a team-best 33 assists for 56 points in 53 games. He had six power play goals and five game-winners. He recorded a team-high 13 points during the World Championships in which the club earned the gold medal. He was named to the All-Tournament Team despite suffering an injury during the event.

D’Amigo is a 2009 draft choice of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
