FYE Recognized by National Orientation Directors Association

The Office of the First-Year Experience (FYE) was recently named a winner in the annual Publications Showcase as part of the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) national conference. The awards were presented during the conference in Anaheim, Calif., at the beginning of November.

FYE won in three categories — “Outstanding Use of Theme” (Experience it — Orientation 2009), “Outstanding Orientation Website” (Orientation 2009 and Life at Rensselaer blogs), and “Outstanding General Brochure 3 or more colors” (SO/NRB 2009 mailer). Awards were judged based on institution size. This is the sixth year in a row that Rensselaer has won for orientation theme at the national conference. NODA has awarded the FYE office 18 publication awards since the office was founded in 2001. Additionally, Jonathan Masullo ’03, assistant dean of the student experience, was selected to design all publications for the 2008 NODA national conference held in Boston, Mass., for which he won an American Inhouse Design Award in early 2009.

Materials for the three awards were designed and managed by Masullo with assistance from Christopher Aiello ’09, Chris Diorio ’11, Derek Green ’10, David Kafel ’09, Kristi Nelson ’12, Missy Steciuk ’11, Joseph Werther ’10, and Derek Yeager ’11.

The Student Experience (SE) and FYE staff are involved in a more direct way with the NODA organization, as well. Lisa Trahan, assistant vice president for the student experience, co-coordinated the annual Orientation Professionals Institute at the 2009 national conference. Trahan helped to organize faculty from across the nation and helped create a curriculum used to mentor and guide young professionals entering the orientation field. Janelle Fayette, acting dean of the first-year experience, is a co-host for the upcoming regional NODA conference to be held in Ithaca, N.Y., in March 2010. The conference will welcome approximately 250 participants including undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals all working in the field of orientation. Additional SE and FYE staff members are coordinating various aspects of the regional conference as well.
