| Rensselaer Campus Joins Worldwide Effort To Support Climate Change |
 |
On Oct. 24, members of the Rensselaer campus community joined people representing 181 countries to support the largest day of environmental action in the planet’s history. Known as 350.org, the event featured thousands of simultaneous events on every continent, including Antarctica. The event was one of the over 5,200 planned to call for a solution to the climate crisis: reducing the level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere below 350 parts per million.
Closer to home, Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff, along with Capital Region community members, gathered in downtown Albany. At the rally held in Capitol Park, attendees had an opportunity to hear remarks delivered by Alan Belensz of the New York State Office of Climate Change; New York State Senator Neil Breslin; Oliver Holmes, adjunct faculty member in the School of Architecture at Rensselaer, and Congressman Paul Tonko.
The rallies held around the world calling for political action on climate change fall under a campaign spearheaded by former Adirondack resident and author Bill McKibben. McKibben said the rallies were being held prior to a planned international December meeting in Copenhagen, where world leaders will meet to craft a new global treaty on climate change.
