Luncheon Celebrates Invention
Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Mark Wentland (top right) spoke at the annual Inventor’s Luncheon, hosted by the Office of Technology Commercialization. Patent plaques were awarded to 22 members of the community, including Professor Gwo Ching Wang (pictured at bottom right with Ron Kudla, executive director of intellectual property, technology transfer, and new venture creation, and Laban Coblenz, chief of staff).
Founded in the 1990s, the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) helps the Institute protect intellectual property and forges relationships with industry to bring Rensselaer’s discoveries to the marketplace. On Sept. 24, the OTC recognized and awarded patent plaques to 22 members of the Rensselaer community during the annual Inventor’s Luncheon held in the Russell Sage Dining Hall. Mark Wentland, professor of chemistry and chemical biology, delivered remarks that focused on the topic of drug discovery and innovation.

Discoveries in nanotechnology, electronics, energy, biotechnology, and terahertz are all part of the Institute’s expanding intellectual property portfolio as Rensselaer increases its aggressive research initiative. Since 2000, more than 1,300 disclosures have been filed with the OTC. In fiscal year 2009, Rensselaer received over $1,150,000 in revenue from licensing and patent reimbursements. In 2002, Rensselaer generated $62,000.

With the establishment of the OTC, Rensselaer has staked its claim in the changing landscape of American research universities, where researchers are increasingly encouraged to protect and commercialize their discoveries for life-enhancing products.
