Campus Community Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October
During the month of October, members of the Rensselaer campus community found ways to support the national Breast Cancer Awareness Month efforts.

Members of the women’s ice hockey team participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The event, held on Oct. 18 in Albany’s Washington Park, featured more than 12,000 walkers. The Engineers team, which comprised 25 walkers including players and coaches, raised more than $900 for the cause. This is the third year that the Rensselaer team has participated in the annual walk, having raised over $5,500 toward the fight against breast cancer.

Closer to home, to kick off this year’s annual Benefits Fair and Healthy Campus Initiative on the Rensselaer campus, the Division of Human Resources partnered with Capital District Physician’s Health Plan and Bellevue Woman’s Hospital to bring the Mobile Mammography van to campus on Oct. 23. Members of the Division of Human Resources noted that they wanted to make the screenings convenient and accessible to members of the campus community, recognizing that regular preventive screenings and check-ups are vital for a healthy life. Seventeen people scheduled appointments for the screenings.

Doctors encourage women over 40 years of age to have mammograms on a regular basis in order to detect breast cancer early. Also, women younger than 40 years of age who have a family history of breast cancer may need to receive screenings at an earlier age and should check with their provider about scheduling a baseline screening.
