In today’s job market, nailing the interview may be the key to successfully landing the job. In an effort to prepare business students for that all-important interview, the Lally School of Management & Technology hosted the RPIdol event on Sept. 16.

The event, held in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies auditorium, provided students with a chance to hone their interviewing skills with the pros. During the competition, students were given a unique opportunity to learn the full range of verbal and non-verbal cues necessary to succeed in job interviews.

The format was based on the popular American Idol singing competition. The distinguished panel of judges included: Monroe “Bud” Moseley, vice president and director, Isaacson Miller; Robin G. Mamlet, Consultant, Witt/Kieffer; and David C. Mead-Fox, Ph.D., senior client partner, Korn Ferry International.

In the final round, Curtis Powell, vice president for human resources at Rensselaer, interviewed the five finalists: Sandeep Mohan R., MBA ’11; Ashley Mainwood, Pathfinder MBA ’12; Glenn VanMoffaert ’11; Sarah McCaslin ’12, and special guest “Lulu Rainbow Starchild” (aka Bria Schultz, EMAC ’10). The finalists were judged on their interviewing skills, and the judges also analyzed and discussed student performances afterward.

McCaslin won the event, and each finalist received a 30-minute one-on-one interview coaching consultation with one of the judges.
