Mark Little ’82, senior vice president and director of GE Global Research, was the keynote speaker at Rensselaer’s 2008 Trustee Celebration of Faculty Achievement on Dec. 4 in the auditorium of the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies. The annual event is an opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions and achievements of Rensselaer’s faculty members.
Little is responsible for guiding one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated corporate research and development programs. GE Global Research employs more than 2,500 researchers at four multidisciplinary facilities, and provides technology for all of General Electric’s businesses. Prior to becoming research director, Little was vice president of GE Energy’s power generation segment headquartered in Schenectady, N.Y., which is a world-leading supplier of power generation equipment including gas, steam, wind, and hydro turbine-generators, turnkey power plant services, gasification, and integrated gasification combined cycle technologies.
Following Little’s lecture, titled “Redefining What’s Possible,” President Shirley Ann Jackson and the trustees recognized and honored faculty achievement during a reception at the Russell Sage Dining Hall.
“Our faculty are integral to the growth and prosperity of this university,” said President Shirley Ann Jackson. “Our faculty continues to draw international attention and prestige to Rensselaer. Unprecedented hiring under The Rensselaer Plan has enabled us to strengthen our traditional disciplines, while growing in new, interdisciplinary arenas. We are blessed to have faculty members whose accomplishments bring great distinction to themselves, to their colleagues, and to their students.”
“Each year at this event I am in awe of the talent and commitment of our distinguished faculty members,” said Samuel Heffner Jr. ’56, chairman of the board of trustees. “It is a great honor for the Board of Trustees to host this dinner, for it gives us a formal opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for all they do. Rensselaer is among the world’s top research universities in no small part due to their boundless dedication and effort.”
