Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Delivers Toys to Troy Elementary School Kids
The tradition of community service by student organizations at Rensselaer is as old as the Institute itself, and volunteerism has always been central to Greek life as well as a range of student service groups. Members of Rensselaer’s Pi Kappa Alpha (Pikes) fraternity continue to pursue a series of programs and activities developed to enrich the lives of young students and residents living in the city of Troy.

On Jan. 23, the fraternity will host a clothing drive at Unity House located in downtown Troy. Last month, more than 25 members of the fraternity as well as sorority members of Alpha Gamma Delta and Pi Beta Phi helped 400 Troy elementary school students get a head start on the holidays through the “Pikes Presents” initiative.

On Dec. 11, each of the students enrolled at Public School 2 received a gift ranging from board games to stuffed animals to toy trucks. This is the third year that the fraternity has organized the event in an effort to brighten the lives of area children. Through a series of donations from fraternity members, family and friends, and fundraising activities, the Pikes raised more than $2,500 to purchase the gifts. Additionally, the Rensselaer Union Bookstore donated more than $200 worth of school supplies for the teachers.

The fraternity members say that the goal of these initiatives is to cultivate role models for the young children and also to give back to the community. They also have a mentoring program at Public School 2, and work with students enrolled in programs at the Unity Sunshine School and the Troy Boys and Girls Club.
