Faculty Governance Review Committee Named
President Jackson has announced a search committee for the new dean of the School of Science. The current dean, Wei Zhao, has been appointed rector of the University of Macau in China, beginning with the next academic year. “Since Dr. Zhao will be leaving us in the fall of 2008, and because of the importance of this position to the Institute, I have initiated a national and international search for a dean of science,” President Jackson said in a memo to campus.

The dean is responsible for the vision, strategic direction, academic and research programs, and the administrative and financial well-being of the school and its research centers.

Members of the Core Recruitment Committee are: Alan Cramb, the John A. Clark and Edward T. Crossan Chair and dean of engineering (chair); Frank Spear, head of earth and environmental sciences (co-chair); Robert Linhardt, the Ann and John H. Broadbent Jr. ’59 Senior Constellation Professor of Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering and professor of chemistry and chemical biology; Shawn-Yu Lin, Future Chips Constellation Professor and professor of physics, applied physics, and astronomy; George Makhatadze, Computational Biology Constellation Professor and professor of biology; Deborah McGuinness, Tetherless World Constellation Professor and professor of computer science; Isom Herron, professor of mathematical sciences; and Shekhar Garde, the Elaine S. and Jack S. Parker Professor in Science and Engineering and head of chemical and biological engineering.

“While this committee will have the principal responsibility for the identification of outstanding candidates for this position, attracting the highest quality individual will require the effort of the entire university community, and I enlist your assistance in this most important process,” President Jackson said. She has asked Curtis Powell, vice president for human resources, to work with the committee in an expedited fashion and to present a set of recommended candidates by Sept. 1, 2008. Suggestions or nominations for this position should be submitted to Dean Cramb.
