Rensselaer Has the Floor: Alumni Event at the New York Stock Exchange
The floor of the New York Stock Exchange was alive with Rensselaer alumni and friends April 2 as President Shirley Ann Jackson and Rensselaer Chairman of the Board of Trustees Samuel Heffner ’56 welcomed former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker ’05 (Hon.). The event brought together more than 300 attendees, making it the largest alumni event ever in New York City.

Chairman Volcker offered his appreciation for the invitation to present to so many of the Rensselaer community, indicating that his father, Paul Volcker, Class of 1911, spoke highly of his Rensselaer education. Volcker touched on the pressing issues facing the American and global economy, commenting that financial crises are related to other more fundamental problems, and that in the case of our current economy, consumption was up to unprecedented levels, and well beyond what we were producing. “The kind of adjustments we are
having are inevitable,” said Volcker, “and they had to happen to rebalance the economy to a more sustainable level of consumption.”

“Hearing comments on the economy directly from a former Federal Reserve chairman is incredible, but to see him on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, a crossroad of global markets and economics, was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Bob Fornasiero ’08, president of the Red & White Student Organization. “I was very proud to be standing there listening as the RPI flag flew behind him on the bell podium in the presence of so many of our distinguished and up-and-coming alumni.”

President Jackson concluded the evening with a chime from the ceremonial “closing bell.”
