2008 SAE Formula Car Rollout
Rensselaer’s SAE Formula Car team unveiled the 2008 car to President Jackson, administrators, students, faculty, and other members of the campus community in the Heffner Alumni House March 31.

“2008 marks a pivotal step forward for the RPI Formula SAE racecar team, as we will attend competitions in both Michigan and California for the second consecutive year,” said Levi Porter, team leader. “The 2008 racecar was unveiled on March 31, which is the earliest any car has ever been completed, despite having one of the smallest teams in recent history. As a result, expectations are high and we are now focusing on testing and driver training, which will allow us to position ourselves for another stellar finish in both competitions.”

Last year the team placed ninth in Michigan and 17th in California.

“We are not really doing anything too new with the team this year; it’s been the usual design, build, test, and fundraise operations,” said Laura Wontrop, team business manager. “We did incorporate Team Center into our team archives process, however. Team Center was part of the PACE package RPI received in September of last year. It gives us a central database for us to store files to avoid a loss of knowledge with graduating team members.”

This year’s car features new drive train, suspension, and intake systems as well as a new chassis design, according to Wontrop.
