Field Hockey Among Division III’s Smartest

The Rensselaer field hockey team has been recognized by the 2007 ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as one of the top academic teams in Division III. The Red Hawks, who have a team grade point average of 3.37, saw
12 student-athletes named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

One of 88 schools to be recognized, Rensselaer has consistently been one of the top squads over the last four seasons, including being named the nation’s top academic squad in both 2004 and 2005.

Rensselaer’s individuals named are Joanna Aliprando, Margaret Chowaniec, Michelle Clemente, Marissa Fabrizio, Shaina Feldman, Lauren Fernandes, Sage Foley, Molly Johnston, Jessica Martinolich, Sarah Merlin, Audrey Newcomb, Lisa Pak, Stephanie Petta, Michelle Roy, Elise Russell, and Sara Stylinski.

Eighteen of Rensselaer’s 23 members qualified for the Dean’s List last semester, including 13 who earned at least a 3.50 GPA and three with a perfect 4.0.

The Red Hawks, who finished 5-11, helped Rensselaer student-athletes post an average grade point average of 3.11 for the term. That GPA ranked higher than that of the entire campus, which had an average of 3.05, as well as that of non-student-athletes, which was also a 3.05. Thirteen of Rensselaer’s athletic programs boasted average GPAs of 3.10, including nine with a 3.3 or better.
