Grand Marshal Week 2008, a week of campuswide celebrations and student elections, will be held March 28-April 4. This year’s theme is “Hollywood A Red Carpet Affair.” The GM Week Committee has created an inclusive schedule of the events featuring Rensselaer Union student organizations.
In addition to the typical main events, this year’s GM Week will include a new feature the “Finale-Finale,” a semiformal event, “as an excuse to put out a red carpet, Oscars-style.” There will be food, the Rainbow Room Trio, ballroom dancing, and a DJ for dancing afterward. It will be held in the Alumni House, and there will be a limited number of tickets available.
Some of the week’s highlights: The kickoff event will be held on Saturday, March 29. The GM Week Committee is bringing in comedian Richie Holliday, who has a popular video currently on You Tube. There will also be a movie trivia game show with a host in which contestants can win prizes. In addition, there will be food, an airbrush tattoo artist, wing-burgers on sale, and opportunities to get your picture taken to go on a fake backstage pass or a movie poster.
The Midweek event on April 2: The Provost’s Office is hosting its annual barbecue with hotdogs, hamburgers, and veggie burgers for all, held in the Armory. SAE’s annual soccer-a-thon will be going on at the same time in the Armory gym. The GM Committee will offer fun on three different inflatables (including a giant obstacle course called the Ultimate Wild One), red carpet photos, and the screening of the movies that are competing in the Film Festival, which is co-hosted by Rensselaer.
The Finale event on April 4: The GM Week event will be back in the Armory to show two James Bond movies on a 10x14-foot inflatable movie screen. The movies are GoldenEye and From Russia With Love. Students are invited to sit on the bleachers and/or bring their own chairs, pillows, blankets, etc. At the same time, there will be laser tag in another giant inflatable, as well as the opportunity to take magazine cover photos.
In addition to all of these events, mugs will be given away for those who vote in elections, and T-shirts will be on sale at all events.
All of Rensselaer’s clubs and organizations are based in the Rensselaer Union. Home to more than 160 clubs, sports, and organizations, it is one of the only student-run Unions in the country.
