Inside Rensselaer: Dec. 5, 2008: Focus on: Fall Sports Action

The fall season was a successful one for Rensselaer’s athletic teams as each of the teams thrived in its own way. Following are some of the highlights:

The football team, led by senior quarterback Jimmy Robertson, the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, opened the season with seven straight wins, made a three-week appearance in the Football Coaches Top 25 Poll, and played in the post-season for the fourth straight year. The Engineers concluded the season with an 8-2 record and a victory in the ECAC North Atlantic Championship Bowl.

The women’s soccer team, under new head coach Cord Farmer, ran off five straight wins to start the season.

Bridget LaNoir ’99 led the field hockey team to an 8-2 start. The team found itself in the national rankings for three straight weeks, including as high as
17th nationally.

Men’s soccer tallied 13 wins on its way to an NCAA Tournament at-large berth — the team’s first since 1998. Head coach Adam Clinton, who led the squad to its first national ranking in 12 years, was named the Liberty League Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams enjoyed solid seasons, culminating with junior Erin Kyle earning a place in the NCAA National Championship Meet in Indiana. Kyle finished 193rd of 297 runners at the National Meet at Hanover College.

The golf team had four top-5 finishes, including one third-place spot, with four freshmen and a sophomore on the roster.

Women’s tennis enjoyed unprecedented victories and year-end success in the New York State Tournament.
