The race for the White House is officially over, and the next president of the United States is Barack Obama. Prior to the Nov. 4 election night, Rensselaer students had a chance to voice their opinions of each of the candidates and their policies. Members of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc., hosted a political debate featuring two student organizations the College Republicans and the Progressive Student Alliance. More than 160 people attended the event, which featured a 60-minute debate between the two groups. The topics addressed included the economy, the war in Iraq, universal health care, education, and immigration. The program also included audience participation with questions being collected from the audience after the panel’s debate, along with YouTube-style video questions. According to Elvin Garcia, a member of the fraternity who also served as the moderator, the fraternity organized the event with the hopes of providing students with a platform to speak, noting in his opening remarks that “knowledge is power in this country’s most historic, inspirational, and exciting presidential election.”
